Faery Folk

Nothing fires the imagination as much as the idea of faeries and elves. Unfortunately in our search for the modern life, we have grown insensitive to the nuances of nature. We have built boundaries and we guard ourselves from that which we do not understand.

It has become easy to assume that we know all about the world. We have been exploring for centuries and yet humanity is discovering that many of our myths and legends are founded in truth. They still intrigue and fascinate; they touch a primal chord. Here are just a few of them:

Brownies

Land of Origin:
Scotland
Appearance and temperament:
This is one of the most benevolent and kind faeries you could ever hope to meet. They are very small dwarf faeries with pointed ears.
Where to find them:
Induce them to come to your home by leaving out food, and by showing kindness to all living creatures.

Dryads

Land of Origin:
Celtic countries
Other names:
Tree spirits, Tree ladies
Appearance and temperament:
Dryads are tree dwelling spirits. They are seen as wisps of pure light, sometimes gently coloured. They are very playful creatures.
Where to find them:
In the physical or on the astral plane you would have most success contacting them in a grove of trees.

Elves

Land of Origin:
Worldwide
Appearance and temperament:
They are small and chubby. Most are kind and beneficial to humans
Where to find them:
In fields, homes and woodland.

Fays

Land of Origin:
Albania
Appearance and temperament:
Fays are tiny, winged seasonal faeries who are born teasers and have very capricious natures, but are never malicious.
Where to find them:
In nature.

Gnomes

Land of Origin:
Europe
Appearance and temperament:
Gnomes are dwarf faeries who appear to be quite old because they mature early. They are kind hearted and will always aid sick or frightened animals.
Where to find them:
At the base of old oak trees.

Gremlin

Land of Origin:
Germany
Appearance and temperament:
They can range in size from very small to almost human sized. They are hairy all over and tend to be dark brown in colour. They do not like humans.
Where to find them:
They were seen on the wings of World War II planes but seeking them out is not recommended.

Hobgoblin

Land of Origin:
England
Other names:
Goblins
Appearance and temperament:
They can appear just as dark blobs but others as mean looking elves.
Where to find them:
Contact not advised.

Irish Elves

Land of Origin:
Possibly Germany
Other names:
The Little People. The Wee Folk. The Little Fellers
Appearance and temperament:
Elf in Ireland is a generic term for non-winged faeries. Irish elves are dwarf-like in appearance. They are friendly but wary of humans.
Where to find them:
At the base of sacred trees in dense woodlands.

Jinn

Land of Origin:
Saudi Arabia
Other names:
Genie
Appearance and temperament:
They live in bottles and oil lamps from which they appear when summoned by their master or owners and grant wishes.
Where to find them:
Not known

Kelpies

Land of Origin:
Scotland
Appearance and temperament:
Kelpies are rarely seen anymore. These small, bulbous-shaped faeries with huge teeth and pointed ears are sly, stupid, and extremely foul tempered.
Where to find them:
Contact is not advised.

Leprechauns

Land of Origin:
Ireland
Appearance and temperament:
A trickster by nature, Leprechauns love to play pranks on the humans they meet. They are mischievous but will be helpful to humans who approach them with respect. They are very quick witted unless they are drunk!!! They are solitary faeries.
Where to find them:
Try seeking them in wild areas with large grassy hills.

Nymphs

Greece
Appearance and temperament:
Nymphs are diminutive female faeries known to be very seductive
Where to find them:
Nymphs exist in every conceivable place in nature!

Phookas

Land of Origin:
Ireland
Appearance and temperament:
Phookas are the Hobgoblins of Ireland. They are trooping faeries that run in destructive packs. They are said to be extremely ugly and ill-tempered and to have frequent quarrels amongst themselves.
Where to find them:
Contact is not advised!

Pixies

Land of Origin:
Scotland
Other names:
Piskies
Appearance and temperament:
Small winged creatures with pointed ears and noses. They are generally friendly but are extremely capricious and given to non-malicious mischief
Where to find them:
In flower gardens and wildflower reserves.

Salamanders

Land of Origin:
Middle East
Other names:
Fire Elementals or Guardians of the South
Appearance and temperament:
Look identical to the lizard-like amphibians of the same name. They are regarded as powerful being.
Where to find them:
You automatically call them to your circle when you invoke the four directions.

Satyrs

Land of Origin:
England
Other names:
Puck, Pan. He is also called Jack Robinson as in 'Before you can say...'
Appearance and temperament:
He has the head of a young male and a body of a goat and small horns on his head. He has a playful lusty nature and loves to play pranks on humans.
Where to find him:
Look for him in woodlands which are populated with animals.

Snow Faeries

Land of Origin:
Europe and Asia
Other names:
Jack Frost, Snow Queen
Appearance and temperament:
Snow faeries take on many different appearances depending on where they are living. They appear to have no interest in us at all.
Where to find them:
In a night winter wood or near winter streams and lakes.

Sylphs

Land of Origin:
Greece and Egypt
Other names:
Windsingers, Guardians of the East
Appearance and temperament:
Sylphs appear as very small winged creatures whose features are vaguely human although they are almost transparent. They can be helpful to humans who seek them out.
Where to find them:
They are automatically called in casting a circle when the four directions are called.

Trolls

Land of Origin:
Germany and Scandinavia
Appearance and temperament:
Trolls vary in size but generally they are larger than faeries. They are usually hairy and quite grotesque. Trolls hate humans, animals and other faeries.
Where to find them:

Undines

Land of Origin:
Greece
Other names:
Sea Sprites, Sea Guardians, Water Elementals.
Appearance and temperament:
Undines appear like small seahorses with human faces. They are stern and yet playful depending on what they feel is appropriate at the time. They are also thought to have a somewhat seductive nature.
Where to find them:
They are called to the direction of the west when casting circle.
