Tools of the craft

It is up to you whether you want to spend a lot of money on special equipment but I can assure that your Magick will be no less effective if you use a simple alternative.

Alter
This can be a special table or more simply the surface that you clear for your working equipment.
Alter Cloth
This can be elaborate or simple. Of course you do not need to have one at all. Alternatively you can use a cloth as your alter rather than use a piece of furniture.
Wand
Wands are used to evoke the energy of a spell and bind together the energy of the spell, sending (channelling) the power in the direction the wand is pointed. It is also used to call up and control certain angels and entities - it communicates by invitation, not by command - an instrument of invocation.
Athame or Sword
This is a double-edged dagger with a black handle. The Athame is used to 'draw' (cast) a sacred circle prior to a ceremony or spell casting, and for banishing unwanted entities from the circle. The Athame can also be used to control and channel the energy of spells (as with the Wand).
Incense Burner
Charcoal blocks are placed in or on the incense burner, incense is placed on the burning charcoal and the smoke from the incense takes your spell, message, wishes up to the heavens and out to the universe to be granted.
Chalice/Cup/Goblet
This can be made of any substance and is used to contain the ritual wine shared around the circle during ceremonies.
The Besom
This is the Witches broomstick. The main use is for sweeping negativity and evil entities out of a magick circle prior to commencing rituals.
The Pentacle
This is a flat disc of brass, copper, wood, gold, silver or ceramic. On the centre of the disc is a pentagram - the symbol of the five - pointed star used in magic for thousands of years for protection. Items are place on the pentacle for consecration.
Clothing
When performing magick ceremonies or rituals you should have a robe which you only use for magical purposes in loose comfortable natural material such as cotton or silk and the colour is up to you although usually it is either black or white. Of course you can where nothing - some people feel this puts them more in touch with nature!
